SIMULTANEOUS POLLS FOR KERDAU AND MERLIMAU ON MARCH 6

KUCHING, Feb 18 — Election Commission (EC) chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof announced here today that the Kerdau by-election would be held simultaneously with the Merlimau by-election in Malacca.

The nomination day is February 26 and polling on March 6.

The Malaysian Insider understands that the EC was supposed to discuss the matter on Sunday but held a meeting late this evening instead after the Shah Alam High Court decided that there was no vacancy in Port Klang.

Badrul Hisham Abdullah remains the assemblyman there as the court ruled that Selangor Speaker Datuk Teng Chang Khim had erred in his declaration that Badrul Hisham had been absent from the state assembly for over six months.

The dates for the Merlimau polls were decided last month.

The Kerdau seat became vacant after its incumbent Datuk Zaharuddin Abu Kasim, 63, died after a heart attack in his home on February 12.

The Umno man had beaten PAS’s Hassanuddin Salim by a majority of 1,615 votes in the 2008 general election after polling 4,135 votes.
